Sorry for your pain, and yes, I agree an email indicating that there was a v1.1 upgrade and how to access it - most especially for DRM-free users like us, would not only have been a nice gesture, but pretty much expected.

It's never a bad idea to let users know that bug fixes and improvements have been made. Just sayin .. ;)

I also see on the home page there have been several changes to the game play including the option where one may make it Easier to play through ... ?!?

... made it easier to play through - ha, come on, the game is Exceptionally Easy to play through in its original format - I played each mage, except as mentioned - not the fire mage yet, through at least twice to include the various side quests including smiting the Enchantress during the original Earth Mage run through, and then playing through and sparing her ... that is at least 6 times already - there are a couple of " slightly challenging " puzzles, and the "boss type fights" just need to work a strategy to beat them ...
... And I'm guessing that during the first week after release there would not have been any walk-through "help" available anyways ... so, as per "old-school gaming style" - get stuck in a puzzle - write down what you tried Until You Solve It, and some were simply "literal" keys, also keep returning to the forest and wastelands to get as many gems etc. to improve your battling skills and strength.

Ok, this is where we say "to each their own". I'm glad you enjoy(ed) the game in your own particular style. But .. not everyone enjoys combat, and it's a welcome change to have the devs add a way to bypass it if that's what one prefers.

I'm not a skilled gamer by any means but I do play games with combat in them, so I was interested in learning the combat in this one. I'm also a fan of "pretties" that only drop in loot soooo ... :p That said, it took me some amount of time and effort to figure out how to survive while trying to find my way through the forest and wastelands. There were times (v1.0) when I desperately wished for a way to stop having to combat foes .. or running away and losing my place while I was mapping. I just wanted to get on with things! So for folks like me, the option to turn off regular combat was/is welcome.

As a backer - I had been notified my name would be in the "book", but I am not listed ( one of my friends who was also a backer, his name is in the book )
As GameDevChris said, they did send out a notification to backers, but I believe (not certain) you had to respond to it and tell them specifically what name you wanted to use.

Once inside the game it took me awhile to find my name in the book. I hadn't remembered (it *has* been years!) that I chose a favorite character name, one that I've used for decades, and not this forum name, which is what at first I assumed would be in the book.

Anyways, I hope you enjoy the rest of your time in the game. I thought it was well worth waiting for and hope lots of new players get to enjoy it too!

Had this buried in another thread and decided to break it out for anyone else seeking the information:

Quote from: Jet on March 08, 2019, 09:05:55 AMWhat command allows me to change savegame folder?

I found some great save game info for macs (and linux) in the game FAQs thread on Steam:

https://steamcommunity.com/app/270610/discussions/0/1836811737983629901/

From the FAQ:

QuoteQ) How can I change the save-game folder on MacOs or Linux?

A) In Windows, you can do this directly from the winsetupexe program. But on MacOs and Linux, you'll need to take a few precautions and follow these steps:

1) First, manually create the new savegame folder you want and name it something appropriate, like "MagesSaves".

2) Go to your current (default) savegame folder and open acsetup.cfg in a text editor. At the bottom of the [misc] section, add the following line containing the absolute path to your new savegame folder. For example, in Windows it would look like this:

user_data_dir=C:\MagesSaves

Tip: On MacOs, you can easily copy long pathnames by selecting the desired file or folder (in this case the Save Game folder that you created), and using Cmd+Opt+C to copy the full pathname. Paste this (using Cmd+V) into the the game's acsetup.cfg file as indicated above.

Note: For MacOS Steam installations, the Mage's Initiation acsetup.cfg file is typically found here: ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/Mages Initiation/Mage's Initiation.app/Contents/Resources/acsetup.cfg

Save the acsetup.cfg file and close it.

3) While still in the current (default) savegame folder, copy and paste all files ending in .dat into your new savegames folder (don't move or cut them - just copy and paste). This is important if you want to retain your achievements and in-game settings.

4) Now when you run the game, it should start up and look in the new savegames folder you created (which should be empty, so your in-game savegames list will also appear empty).

5) Repeat the above process for every new savegames folder you wish to create.

6) If you ever want to switch back to an older savegame folder, you'll need to open acsetup.cfg in your original (default) savegames folder and edit the user_data_dir= line to point to the folder where your desired savegames are stored. Then save the acsetup.cfg file and close it. This needs to be done prior to running the game.

(Note: at this point you should copy & paste (overwrite) all .dat files from your most recent savegames folder into the savegames folder you're switching over to, if you want to retain your most up-to date achievements.)

To go back to using the default savegames folder, simply delete the user_data_dir= line from acsetup.cfg all together and save it.

It's a bit fiddly, but there's currently no GUI set-up program for non-Windows AGS games.

So the line to enter in the config file (acsetup.cfg) is user_data_dir=savegamefilepathname

where "savegamefilepathname" is the exact path for the save games folder that we create

Since I'm not using Steam, I found my "acsetup.cfg" file in this folder:

Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Mage's Initiation/

Did you
search him? It doesn't drop on its own.
I've forgotten to do that and had to wait for him to show up again.

I downloaded the DRM-free version through Humble, and it's v1.0-RC3

Is the v1.1 update available for this install? and if so, where do we get it?

If not, when can we expect it?  :P

Thanks!

Edit: Never mind (in her best Roseanne Roseannadanna voice). I found my Humble distribution email with the link to the download site. Turns out the v1.1 update is already there. Yay!  :)

To answer my own question:

Any resolution help for those of us on Mac?

I've got the game in windowed mode, and I can change the size of the window, but the resolution is bit-map looking (like basic resolution stretched to fit the window size, so low resolution). How can I get the game in a higher resolution?

I finally figured out that the resolution is what it is because native game resolution is 640 x 480 and a bigger window only stretches it. So I simply reduce the size of the window to get a more appealing resolution for my own viewing. The pixelization does add a nostalgic touch from "the old days".  ;)

Regarding screen resolution for mac - I found some info in the readme.txt file about resolution, but it doesn't tell me what I need to know. Specifically I found the acsetup.cfg file, but there's not much in it. The readme.txt refers to a bunch of commands, but nothing about the syntax of those commands required by the acsetup.cfg.

What commands would I need to enter/enable to see the game in high resolution?

What command allows me to change savegame folder?

Below is the complete content of my config file from:  ~/Library/Application Support/Mage's Initiation/acsetup.cfg

Using the Humble version of game: v1.0-RC3

MacOS Mojave v10.14.3
MacBook Pro 15" mid 2017
(2.9 GHz Core i7)
16G Memory
Both onboard and discrete memory

Also - I see there's a newer version of the game. Is this released for Humble version? and if so, how can I get the update?

Thanks in advance for any help!

(Edit to add OS version)
