Stealing the gem quest by the tavern thieves

After completing the first trial the thieves suggest you steal a gem from the lord. I thought they ment I should follow the stream and somehow find a path through foilage. I poked around everywhere on those 3 screens and I think I must have misunderstood something.

But I can't talk to them about this topic anymore so I'm lost as to what to do. Any hints?

The screen you need to focus on is the one with the stepping stones across the river. The foliage obscures the drain.
