[Spoiler] - Stuck... need a little help with early game!

I am stuck getting the plank from the hunters lookout...

When I try to get the plank.. it says I need a metal bar and then gives a hint that there is one in the Training Room back at the Mage Tower.. but I can not find anything there...

Any ideas?

Check the corner behind the Fire Mage, you should see it leaning up against the wall.

Take a look near the feet of the suit of armour.

Just couldn't find the darn thing!!

I normally do not like using them.. but is there a "show hotspots" button I can use for last resort problems like this?
